Some of us are blessed with good health, some of us are not. Some of us are fortunate to have healthy families and some of us are faced with the care of family members who have health issues. As we celebrate Older American's Month in May, we realize that the roles and responsibilities within families have changed dramatically over the last 30 years. Today's Baby Boomers are now aging and many of us find ourselves in the 'sandwich generation' caring for both children and senior relatives, while juggling careers.
With the population aging rapidly, the rising costs of long-term care, and the length of stay in hospitals continuing to decrease, family care givers are assuming more of a hands-on role with the medical and personal care of a loved one. With families bearing the brunt for support care and with more long-distance care givers than ever before, family care giving is an integral part of health care today.
Who do you turn to?
The St. Joseph's Network provides a wide range of services to the community beyond the walls of the hospital. Through its affiliates, St. Joseph's can assist families in many ways. Remaining in our own "Home" as we age or being able to keep our family members at "Home" with us is naturally the first option families wish to explore. Knowing how to accommodate and provide care for our loved ones can often times be a challenge.
Taking measures to make your "Home" safer by obtaining assistive devices is a good place to start. Franciscan Health Support, Inc., is a New York State licensed "Home" care agency that specializes in providing "Home" medical equipment and respiratory therapy. Families may need special items to assist them with the care of a loved one such as walkers, canes, bathroom safety items, beds and other equipment.
Caring for a loved one of any age with respiratory disease presents a special challenge for families. Franciscan's respiratory therapists treat conditions such as sleep apnea, COPD, and asthma using a variety of technologies including Bi-pap, C-pap, "Home" oxygen systems, and ventilators.
Senior Citizen and family discussing services Therapists work with families to educate them and the patients on the disease process and strive to promote the highest level of independence.
St. Joseph's Certified "Home" Health Care Agency extends the reach of skilled services from hospitals, clinics, and physician offices into the "Home". Working under the direction of your physician, services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A family-centered approach includes teaching patients and their families about their care, coordinating additional services, and researching community resources.
Loretto Health Support Lifeline offers peace of mind for families and seniors. Lifeline is an easy to use personal response service that ensures older adults are able to get assistance quickly whenever it is needed, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. During the installation process, a Lifeline representative will work with families to develop a comprehensive care plan which includes emergency contact information, medical conditions, preferred hospital, primary care physician and any other pertinent information. With Lifeline you can be assured that the right help is sent to you at the right time.
With today's busy schedules it has become increasingly difficult to accomplish all we must do in one day. Franciscan Pharmacy recognizes the busy lives of those caring for family members and offers several convenient options for obtaining your prescriptions. New prescriptions may be called into the pharmacist by a physician's office and refills can be ordered through an automated system at your convenience. Franciscan Pharmacy is located on the main floor of the Physician Office Building at St. Joseph's Hospital for pick-up. For those unable to pick-up their prescriptions, Franciscan offers FREE delivery in Onondaga County or your medications can be mailed to you.
In addition to the services available through the St. Joseph's Network, Resources for Seniors in Onondaga County assists older adults and their families in making important decisions as they age. Consumers can find helpful definitions, program descriptions, and contact numbers for options regarding housing, "Home" care, legal/financial matters and other supportive services. Caring for ourselves or our families is becoming increasingly complicated. The St. Joseph's Network makes negotiating the maze of health care services easier.
